FOURTH ON THE PC PLATFORM
(4 January 2004, 23:43 | RoN) Coming in at number four on Fragland.net`s "2003 PC [Game of The Year] Awards" is Big Huge Games` Rise of Nations. Its roots are clearly laying in the original Civilization games but the combination of turn-based with real-time strategy only add to the overall gaming experience, the site`s Stephan "Speed" Persoons writes in part.
Ahead of RoN from first to third is Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, Call of Duty and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. - DanQ
OPEN LETTER, `CIV` EXPERIENCE
(4 January 2004, 23:20 | Civ3) A World Wide Web-based literary magazine, McSweeney`s Internet Tendency, has compiled an archive of "Open Letters" from netizens on varying topics. The latest edition is political in nature. Written by one Michael Degnan, he is writing to the civilian administrator of the temporary United States-led coalation in Iraq. It is dated December 23rd, 2003. He begins:
I feel your pain. I, too, have tried to topple dictators, usurp power, and occupy foreign nations while trying to steel domestic support for military intervention. It is not easy, to be sure. Herewith I present a synthesis of lessons I learned as a fierce global power.
He specifically references Civilization III: Gold Edition as providing the experience he cites. C3G combines CivIII and its first expansion pack, Play The World, under one title. Kudos to Civilization Fanatics Center for the heads-up. - DanQ

THREE MENTIONS ON ONE SITE
(2 January 2004, 22:28 | RoN) Two of LoadedInc`s (LI) staff have listed Rise of Nations as one of their five `Top Titles` for 2003 while another has given it a place as one of four `Honourable Mention`s. Steven Macek is the first in the former set with RoN in fourth. He writes that [this is] a very enjoyable mix of [real-time strategy (RTS)] and [turn-based strategy]... making it a frequent play on my PC. [It] uses the best of each providing a familiar feel from the onset... [where] the level of accessibility is commendable.
In the same spot on Tim Partlett`s index, that [b]lessed with arguably the best interface ever designed for the genre and with some of the most innovative features in RTS gaming history, [RoN] provided some of the year[']s best strategy gaming. Finally, LI`s Paul Younger places it on his `Honourable Mention` chart. A screenshot is left aligned to the paragraph about this debut title from game developer Big Huge Games in the first two instances. - DanQ
FURTHER `ACSR` SEASON EXTENSION
(1 January 2004, 23:43 | Misc) On the heels of the first two-month extension for a current season of Apolyton Civilization Site Radio (ACSR) [see story] comes the second today. The World Wide Web-based radio station, delivering news and events on the Civilization and other series covered on Apolyton, has had its present run renewed into the future another sixty days over its most recent order. Accordingly, the last "ACSR Daily" and "ACSR Weekend" shows for this series have been rescheduled for February 27th and February 28th of this year respectively.
Beyond this, ACSR station director, host and Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS) co-owner/administrator Daniel "DanQ" Quick wants it to be known that an acceptable, measurable degree of interest in and usage of ACSR will need to be demonstrated in the forthcoming period to justify the production of more editions.
In the coming weeks, a poll will appear in this site`s "Apolyton/Community" forum asking for readership and, hopefully, listener input on whether or not they are sufficiently enjoying the format of ACSR now so as to provide sufficient impetus to continue with it. The constants to be considered will be as follows: the structure of "ACSR Daily" and "ACSR Weekend" would stay the same, and no additional or replacement shows would be created. Suggestions on modifying the format of the two existing shows, including its distribution media, will be considered however.
A brief timeline on the progression of ACSR`s current and past seasons can be found on the station`s mini-site on ACS. - DanQ
