BOOKMARKED BY THE `R&F`
(2 July 2002, 22:08 | About)
The July, 2002 issue of PCFormat magazine has a sidebar on page 13 entitled "Bookmarks Of The Rich and Famous". This month`s rich/famous individual is none other than Sid Meier himself. Situated between FatBabies.com and ABCNews.com on his list of most traveled websites is Apolyton Civilization Site.
I have a couple of Civ fan sites bookmarked, but I`ll pick the Apolyton Civilization [S]ite, Meier writes. The [c]ommunity has provided us with a lot of ideas for improvements.

MEIER: PCFORMAT INTERVIEW
(2 July 2002, 22:01 | Civ3) Forum user The Viceroy has typed out the Sid Meier interview PCFormat magazine conducted in their July, 2002 issue just recently released. Some highlights:
PCF: What happened to multiplay in CivIII?
Sid: We had hoped to have that in the original version, but we really want to do it right. We learned from Alpha Centauri and CivII that we can`t just take the game as it stands and replace the computer AI with other players and call that a multiplayer version... Our goal is to make multiplayer CivIII where the player never has to wait, the player is never at a point where there is nothing to do, and we have some pretty creative solutions to that problem. Hopefully before too long we`ll be able to finish that.
PCF: Is there going to be a CivIV?
Sid: Every idea we thought would improve the game we put into CivIII. At the moment we can`t imagine what CivIV would have that we haven`t already put into CivIII, but as time goes on and the community grows, anything is possible in the future. Historically, every five or six years there`s been a new version of Civilization.
Finally, what game does Meier wish he had thought of?
Sid: Tetris! It`s like the perfect game. [Laughs] I could have done that! If I`d only thought of it. - DanQ

GAMES DOMAIN PREVIEW
(1 July 2002, 20:13 | RoN) Andrew S. Bub has written a preview of Rise of Nations for GamesDomain.
Although initial impressions of the visuals suggested an [Age of Empires II] rip-off, this was quickly dispelled when [Big Huge Games President Brian] Reynolds began to scroll around the map. The game engine is in 3D and has avoided the muddy quality Empire Earth had when zoomed in. [..] The other reason it looks like AoE is because the programmers at Big Huge wanted to make changes, but keep the interface familiar. [..] But where it diverts from those familiar concepts is what`s interesting. [..]
We`ll have some playable code soon to sink our teeth into, but until then, we remain impressed with the subtle, but very deep changes Reynolds and his team have made to such a familiar genre. - DanQ
