CIVILIZATION III June 2, 1999 - November 30th, 1999
MICROPROSE'S CIV3?
(November 30th, 1999) Icedan(you've probably seen him on the forums) discovered an interview of Wendy White, a programmer at Microprose.
The interview is about a year and a half old, as Aurora of GameGirlz told us. In the question on which project she was working at that moment, she replied
"...Civilization III that is just starting up at the moment" Huh? Unfortunately the interview was more about her and generally women in the gaming industry, so there aren't any other references on Civ3 (we always
said that women dont know how to ask the right questions... don't shoot us Rora!) :))
RELIGION IN CIV3?
(November 16th, 1999) Our "Religions in Civ3?" poll ended with 505 votes. The first choice got the majority of the votes, the full results are the following
| Use name associated with civ or player chooses name, with their own SE effects or effects based on religion type (poly/monotheism, etc.) | 262 / 51% |
| Use name associated with civ or player chooses name, as game progresses SE values change | 154 / 30% |
| Use name associated with civ or player chooses name, with no SE effects | 22 / 4% |
| No names used, with their own SE effects or effects based on religion type | 17 / 3% |
| No names used, as game progresses SE values change | 17 / 3% |
| No names used, no SE effects | 33 / 6% |
In our 8th poll, we ask about ctp's stacked combat model. Thanks to M@ni@c for the idea. Feel free to post your ideas for new poll to this thread.
THE LIST V2 IS HERE!
(November 10th, 1999) Finally! It took almost four months(!), but version 2 of The List is done, mailed to Firaxis, and here on Apolyton. For now
it is only available in the original form, as it was sent to Firaxis, in .doc format. It includes both the work of the apolyton and the official firaxis forums, extending to a total of 479 pages! We hope to have a web
edition(not on 479 pages though :)) of version 2 in a few days...
By the way, we also have Version 1 in ziped doc format.
THE LIST: FIRAXIS INCLUDED
(October 30th, 1999) Yeap, The List is bit delayed, but the reason is good. After the shutdown of the official Firaxis forums,
the civ3 suggestions list which was organized there will be combined with version 2 of the list on Apolyton. So, it will take a few more days, but Yin speaks of 400 pages(think about it for a minute :))!
THE BEAUTY OR THE BEAST?
(August 23rd, 1999) Time for a new poll. This time we ask you on beautifull 3d animated graphics(like smac or ctp)
which are hard if not impossible to edit and need a PIII to run in a decent speed, or simple(=ugly) and easy to change graphics like civ2's. What do you think? Jeff Briggs
in his recent interview said that civ3's graphics will be much better, but wasn't asked about speed or customizability. If you ask us, we would say "the Beaty AND the Beast"! :)
MAC? LINUX? YES!!
(August 23rd, 1999) Our third civ3 poll on "Ports of Civ3 to Mac and Linux" is finally over.
We had 22% of the voters shouting "I am a Linux user, YES!" and a 13% Mac ones. There was also a kind 48% of windows users you simply said "Sure, why not?" and a shameless :) 15% who didn't care. Firaxis???
FIRAXIS TALKS CIV III
(August 19th, 1999) Jeff Briggs gave an interesting interview on FGN Online
on Civilization III. In brief, Jeff explained that graphics are going to be much more better than previous civ games of the team.
Improvments will also be made in trade and "That's just an example of four or five areas of the basic game we want to elaborate and expand on." as Jeff added. He later got us a bit confused when he said that
"The thing we're not saying yet is whether or not it's going to come before Civilization, after Alpha Centauri or between the two. It's going to extend the story in the same was Alpha Centauri did."
Finally, he says that Civ3 is coming "sometime next year" and confirms that Sid is working on the his "secret project", which will actually be the third part of the "Sweep of Time Trilogy",
for the last two years! Better read the whole thing
INTERVIEW WITH DanQ -- *LIVE*
(August 13th, 1999) Yes, you read it right! Check our our official Press Release for more information on how to tune in and participate.
TO HAVE OR NOT TO HAVE?
(July 22, 1999) It's time for a new poll. In the second one, opinions varied on whether Civ3 should have a unit workshop like SMAC or not:
23% answered "Yes, with access throughout all the game", while 31% "Yes, but it must be limited by technology, difficulty or something else".
Another 21% says "Yes, but it should be optional" and another 13% "Yes, but only for scenario design/cheat mode". Finally, 8% says a big "NO" to the whole idea,
and 1% doesn't care...
In our new poll, we ask for your support to Mac and Linux ports of civ3. Thanks to Bill Kalb for the idea. For suggestions about future polls, mail MarkG
FIRAXIS SENDS THANKS
(July 15, 1999) Firaxis got the mail from Yin containing The List,
and Brian Reynolds himself replied. We post it, just for the pleasure of everyone who submitted even a single idea.
The team of The List is now re-organizing, based on the experiences of the last two months. A new forum will most probably be created, and the topics of
discussion might be a bit different now. Stay tuned on the forums, this was just version 1! :)
BACK WHERE THEY BELONG
(July 15, 1999) The title has been quoted directly from the lead story in PCGamer's Eyewitness section in their August, 1999 edition. Here are a couple of excerpts from the article, which discusses the Firaxis deal with MicroProse to create the already widely-anticipated CivIII:
"But as good as Alpha Centauri was, it didn't have the mystique of the Civilization name behind it -- a name that proved to still be a huge draw, as Activision's mediocre but best-selling Civilization: Call To Power has demonstrated.
Jeff Briggs, president of Firaxis, tells us [Firaxis] "what is great about the Civilization line of games will remain intact. We are going to great lengths to make the graphic presentation richer and more compelling, and to deepen the gameplay experience even more without complicating the basic simplicy of the design. Brian Reynolds will be our lead designer, and we have recently brought Doug Kaufman, one of the designers of Civilization II, on board, and he will play a major role. Producer Time Train, the organizing force behind Alpha Centauri, will be heavily involved, and we'll have six to ten talented artists, sound engineers, and composers"".

THE LIST IS HERE!
(July 14, 1999) A couple of days earlier than what we thought, Yin mailed us the first
version of The List, even before sending it to Brian! :) Well, no need to say more, check out the amazing result!
And yes, you can call it an "Apolyton Exclusive"! :)
LIST 1.0 ALMOST HERE!
(July 13, 1999) The latest news from Yin is that the first of version of "The List", the project to create a list of civ3 suggestions from the civers by the civers, is almost done.
We wont say a specific day for obvious reasons, but we think you will definetaly see it here(first and exclusive :)), by the end of the week. Stay tuned!
BECAUSE PENGUINS PLAY TOO
(July 13, 1999)Thirty responses after a week, have you signed? No? Well, sign now!
(July 5, 1999) In our CivIII forums, one of our users has started a petition to ensure a port of CivIII to the Linux platform. To sign your name to the cause, click here!
TFC3H ARCHIVE
(June 16, 1999) TFC3H stands for The First Civilization 3 Homepage, the first fan site devoted
to CivIII suggestions. Created and maintained from 1996 to 1998 by Dorian Credé, TFC3H had eventually a quite large
number of suggestions. We are happy to have all these suggestions archived here in our CivIII section, as a reference
for the ongoing discussions in our forums and comparisons with the newest civ games as well as of course CivIII, when it comes...
In our suggestions area we will also be posting the first version of The List, which is coming in a few days,
as well as the future versions.
RANDOM EVENTS: YES, BUT OPTIONAL
(June 15, 1999) Our first poll on random events ended.
After 827 votes we had: 41% saying yes, 56% saying that it should be optional and only a 3% saying no. On our second poll, we ask
if civ3 should have a unit workshop like smac. Vote now!
Our thanks to Tore Kullgren, Harel Eilam and Ata who suggested the second poll, and to Bill Kalb and Sam0307 who sent us other poll ideas.
5/00? HMMM.... NO
(June 2, 1999) Chips&Bits lists Civilization III for May 2000 release. Several days
ago, we had asked Brian Reynolds for a release date and he responded
"We don't have any firm plans yet as far as release date, so don't take
seriously anything you see that's more specific than my original prediction of "early in the third millenium". ;-)"
OFFICIAL CIV3 FORUM
(June 2, 1999) Firaxis opened the official civ3 forum
today. Meanwhile, our civ3 forums will soon have more than 5000 posts!
