Our celebration of the release of civ3. In red, the operators. In
blue, Firaxis team members
[ACS_MarkG] It's 14:00est, WELCOME TO APOLYTON'S CIV3 RELEASE PARTY!
[ACS_MarkG] Since it's a bit early and the huge growd is not here we'll take it slow
[ACS_MarkG] Hey Mike
[ACS_MarkG] Moderation off for now
[ixnay37] woo hoo!
[prima^SWE] sweet
[LoQtus] cool
[Gramphos] Mike got in in time.
[ixnay37] i'm only gonna stick around for a few, and then go get the game
[connorkimbro] hello everyone
[prima^SWE] hi
[Gramphos] Hi connor.
[ACS_MarkG] First of all, congratulations to Firaxis for the release of Civ3!
[prima^SWE] ye
[Gramphos] yes!
[LoQtus] he, a special guest is actually on time, I think that's a first... well done, Mike! :)
[connorkimbro] Yes, many. I'm calling my local EB right now to see if they have them in yet. :)
[ixnay37] congrats
[LoQtus] yeah, congrats
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Thanks! :)
[Taliseian] w00t! :)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis] Hi all.
[ixnay37] well, i cant stand the anticipation...i'm going to go run (literally) to the mall to pick up the game
[connorkimbro] Hello Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis, welcome, thanks for coming. :)
[ixnay37] bye
[ACS_MarkG] So, who are the lucky people with the game?
[Gramphos] Mark how do you verify the firaxians?
[Gramphos] I don't :(
[LoQtus] me neither :(
[ADG] Me neither :(
[dv8ed] I have it, it just won't run.
[tulcas] gramphos did you still want a savegame file?
[connorkimbro] I will have it. . well. . maybe in less than an hour, maybe a few hours from now. :) Depends on if my Local EB is on the ball or not. :)
[Taliseian] I have a copy :)
[Gramphos] Yes, that could be good
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] It seems some of the MD EB's were on the ball yesterday....
[tulcas] ok i will e-mail you with the info
[Gramphos] good
[connorkimbro] Yes, some of them. Unfortunately, I live on the west coast. :)
[ColdWizard] i don't have the game yet, i'm still trying to hold out and wait for MP
[tulcas] hey mark how long is it going to take before my account gets activated so that i can post in the forums
[ACS_MarkG] Mike, how long ago did civ3 start? Certainly before the announcement in E3, right?
[VolcanoHead] not sure if this is appropriate chat for a party, but Firaxis guys, what was the biggest problem you had to overcome during the construction of the game? Play balance, graphics??
[Gramphos] tulcas, have you recived the activation mail?
[LoQtus] arg, my computer is acting weird, I'm gonna reboot. BRB
[Zealot] hello!
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Hmmm... Civ3 actually started long before I was working for Firaxis but most of it was rewritten when Soren, Jacob Solomon and myself started in May 2000.
[Gregurabi] did you use any of the code from Civ2, or was it done "from scratch"?
[ACS_MarkG] Mike, that was due to Brian&co leaving for BHG?
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis] Biggest problem, that's a good question
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] We referred to some of the code for the demographics calculations and used the art but we really didn't use any of the Civ2 code.
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] The Civ3 code was originally based on SMAC's code but again, most of it was thrown it and rewritten.
[ACS_MarkG] Yeah, we all remember the place holder graphics from civ2 on the first city view screenshots :)
[The_Zealot] funny, I always thought all the demographics in Civ 2 were wrong... =)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] thrown out, that is...
[connorkimbro] What was the most enjoyable part of programming Civ3?
[prima^SWE] IN AI, are there any approach to machine learning or am I going to be able to use my strategies over and over again to beat the Ai?
* connorkimbro just called EB. . not in yet, but they should get a shipment in at around 12:00 (my time)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis] Well, this was my first game, so it just fun to work on it. Civ has such a large following that we really had some high expectations to meet.
[mactbone] woohooo, just installing Civ3 now!!!
[connorkimbro] Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis: you're first game, really? Then especially congrats to you. :)
[Taliseian] How much beta testing was done on Windows XP?
[ACS_MarkG] Hey Javier, great way to get into the gaming business! :) What were your duties?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] I enjoyed working on the editor. It was kind of hair-pulling experience extracting all of the code tied into the engine but it was fun...
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis] thx, no kidding. Well I started out as an intern, and got to do all the exciting text editing tasks...
[connorkimbro] Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS: then you are who the scenario/mod community will want to make requests to concerning any additional editors, etc? :)
[The_Zealot] BTW, are the editor windows grey even on Win XP?
[The_Zealot] or noone tested it on win xp? :)
[Gregurabi] Are there any negotiations afoot with companies like Loki to port Civ3 to additional platforms?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Yes, that would probably be me... :) I think the editor windows are grey even in XP but I haven't tried it on XP. I used the Windows defaults.
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis] After that I worked on finishing up a bunch of the different game screens.
[Gramphos] Speaking about the editor: Is it possible to add units?
[ACS_MarkG] One at a time guys so that we dont have to go in moderated mode :)
[connorkimbro] Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS: I haven't seen the actual game yet, but from the screen shots of the editor, it looks amazingly complex and well done. i have to personally congratulate you on that, well done. :)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis] There is a mac port being done, but I'm not exactly sure who's doing it.
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] We do have a company doing the Mac version but I don't know about any other platforms.
[The_Zealot] too bad Mike... :( I'm really tired of seeing windows with grey backcolors... :(
[The_Zealot] that win xp beige is really nice, IMO
[The_Zealot] i was hoping that the editor used win xp default colors
[The_Zealot] so they were beige on XP and grey on other windows
[The_Zealot] could that be possible?
[VolcanoHead] That question on strategy adaptive AI was interesting... any thoughts Mike? Can we use the same strategies every time?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Adding (not replacing) units is currently not a feature of the editor but is on our list of future additions. We ran into some problems with the graphics file format that was left over from the SMAC engine and unfortunately not discovered until the game had already been shipped. Because of this the "FLC" format we used for the units does not follow the standard FLC specifications. We are working on some fixes for this right now...
[Taliseian] How much beta testing was done on Windows XP?
[LoQtus] good to hear you're already working on fixes guys
[tulcas] Is there any way to add new units to the game with having to replace an old one with the editor...it seems that to add something you have to replace something else?
[The_Zealot] so there will will be future additions! :)
[tulcas] **without having to replace old ones i mean
[connorkimbro] tulcas: that question was just answered :)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Re: AI adaptive strategies -- I'm not sure exactly how well the AI adapts to your play style because I didn't work on the AI at all....
[The_Zealot] any chanve they come out to the public be4 the MP release?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] There's a good chance editor updates will be available as downloadable patches but that's not really my call to make...
[LoQtus] does Civ3 have an event/macro/scripting language of any sort or anything even vaguely resembling it?
[connorkimbro] An addition to LoQtus's question. . if there isn't one yet, how easy would it be to add one, and is that something that is planned?
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis] I'm not sure exactly how many testers had XP machines, but I know a few did.
[The_Zealot] give us a mail; we'll make that person make a good call...
[The_Zealot] :D
[LoQtus] that's exactly what I wanted to add myself too :)
[Gramphos] Can the graphics be replaced? (If the format can't be generated then I doubt it, but...)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] hehe bad button!
[Marcus] hello
[Dazed] Hey all.... just got my copy of civ3.. :O)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] A scripting language was not implemented for civ3 because we do not have any in-game support for events. I may or may not add scripting language support in the future but it will most likely be more of a visual script akin to StarCraft's editor.
[connorkimbro] not sure which is the real one lol :)
[LoQtus] ok, thanks for the info anyway
[VolcanoHead] Interesting... do you feel the lack of event management hinders scenario creativity? Is there a work-around?
[The_Zealot] dazed, do u have win XP?
[Dazed12354] no.. i run win2k The_Zealot
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Technically, the graphics can be replaced (but not through the editor) but you'd have to have FLCs in the incorrect file format. Alternately, you could save a FLC that doesn't use the standard delta-compression scheme and it should work. FLCs have multiple compression schemes and only the default one is incorrect in our engine....
[The_Zealot] ok, thx
[Gramphos] I got the saves now tulcas. You can remove the fileshare. Thanx
[Gregurabi] Which of the Civ3 developers is the best player, and what strategy did he/she use? :)
[tulcas] okey dokey
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] I think Jeff Morris is probably our best civ player....
[otkastbob] Im still my in tutorial
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] You can see his strategies on Adrenaline Vault
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] Though I'd put my money on the testers.
[otkastbob] got all jungle isle
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Good point
[ACS_MarkG] What level do you play guys?
[Gramphos] Does Sid have time to play Civ, or is he just playing Golf?
[otkastbob] had to build roads
[prima^SWE] Gramphos: lol
[ACS_MarkG] Has anyone at Firaxis won deity yet? Should we have a contest here at Apolyton for it? :)
[otkastbob] hehe
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] I played my last game on Monarch (King)... I don't do very well on the higher levels...
[otkastbob] no irigation?
[otkastbob] in start
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] I play Regent/Monarch usually, it's quiite a struggle to keep afloat on anything higher
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Sid plays a lot of GT3.... :) as well as Golf and Civ (He's kind of busy with Golf these days though).
[otkastbob] ah
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] No one's beaten deity yet.... that I know of
[connorkimbro] What is one thing that you WANTED to put in the game, but unfortunately cut from the final version?
[VolcanoHead] at high levels how does the computer civ win? AC, Culture or world domination?
[otkastbob] ai
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] I don't know that anyone's beat it at deity.. I started a deity game on a huge world with only 2 civs, and the ai player was in the industrial age when I reached the middle ages
[otkastbob] haven't discovered maps yet
[The_Zealot] that looks good... =)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Hmmm... in my last game, the AI was trying for diplomatic, then conquest after I built the UN and then the Romans made a mad dash for AC but didn't have uranium and I wasn't giving it to them...
[ACS_MarkG] I guess we'll have a contest then :) "The Apolyton Deity Challenge"!
[Gregurabi] one on one vs. the AI would probably not be wise.. you'd want 2 AIs so they can fight each other :)
[Roman] The info on deity sounds encouraging
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] It won a cultural victory before I even met it.
[otkastbob] hehe
[VolcanoHead] brilliant!
[prima^SWE] sounds good
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] The first wonder I built was the Apollo Program. The AI got all the other ones early in the game....
[LoQtus] Markos:not really a fair contest: the Americans have a 2 week advantage :(
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] I'm sorry, I meant to say Theory of Evolution
[The_Zealot] lol
[The_Zealot] yeah
[prima^SWE] althoug an cheating AI are more frustrating that a smart one
[otkastbob] hehe
[connorkimbro] LoQtus: perhaps if we have regional apolyton challenges. :)
[The_Zealot] what does that wonder do, Mike?
[Roman] How does combat work?
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] I think it possible to beat the AI, but you really have to play the resource and diplomacy game well.
[ACS_MarkG] Mike, why do the levels have changed names?
[LoQtus] that could indeed be fun :) too bad i'm a modder rather than a player (don't see myself winning on deity for a long time to come)
[LoQtus] presuming the ai is indeed as good as advertised...
[Gramphos] Darn Civ3-screensaver. It showed up and didn't disappear until I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose to close it
[The_Zealot] oh yeah, MarkG! now you must refresh our status as Apolytoners!! =)))
[The_Zealot] you closed my thread about it!
[The_Zealot] but I didn't forget it!
[The_Zealot] ;)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] I'm not sure. I beleive Jeff Briggs wanted different names than Civ2...
[The_Zealot] no more princes from now on!
[The_Zealot] now they are regents!!!
[The_Zealot] (I think)/
[Roman] How does combat work?
[Patrick_Dawson] You can change the difficulty names in the editor back to prince.
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] I'm not sure what you mean Roman, you move a unit onto another unit, and they fight
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Roman: can you be more specific?
[Gramphos] Is there a way to watch the AI play. (as the -d mode for Colonization)? I like it sometimes when I want to investigate the behavior of the AI.
[The_Zealot] do units still have the health bar?
[JonahFalcon] Hello everyone.
[Gramphos] Hi
[Taliseian] hiya Jonah
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Yes units still have a health bar
[JonahFalcon] [- Jonah Falcon, GamePen, been playing Civ III Ltd Ed for the past 48 hrs
[VolcanoHead] Sticking to the computer civ's, do they stick to the same government, or change quickly?
[JonahFalcon] Hi Mike
[connorkimbro] hello JonahFalcon, welcome. :)
[Gregurabi] Roman: there's something about leaders, creating an army which is a stack of up to 3 units, and then they fight together and can't be killed unless you kill all of them...
[Roman] Mike: Is there something to differenciate the more modern units from the older ones other than the attack and defense numbers?
[Roman] What is the formula for calculating combat?
[JonahFalcon] I'm annoyed right now because there is NO SALTPETER anywhere in any unexplored territory.
[JonahFalcon] Gotta send out a ship to explore to get some.
[Gramphos] Roman: have you read the changes made to the FAQ at civ3.com last Friday?
[JonahFalcon] No saltpeter = no gunpowder = no guns = no musketmen
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] do you have gunpowder yet?
[Roman] Sorry for all these questions, but I do not have the game.
[JonahFalcon] yes, I have Gunpowder
[JonahFalcon] Just no saltpeter
[JonahFalcon] LOL
[ACS_MarkG] Any response to the stuff that Avault writes about Archers and Cruise Missiles?
[JonahFalcon] S'ok
[Gregurabi] that reminds me... is there any benefit to having more than 1 of a given special resource type? like, if you have 2 iron then you can build *more* sword-wielding units?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] The AI does seem to change governments when a differnt government is more suited to their current goal. Each civ has a default "favorite" government and "least favorite" government. They try to avoid their least favorite and steer towards their favorite.
[JonahFalcon] First time Civ has actually forced me to explore when I didn't want to :)
[Taliseian] heh
[Patrick_Dawson] If you have more than one resource you can trade it or hoarde it so the AI can't build those same units.
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] well look at it this way, say a bunch of archers come up on a truck carrying a missile, will the truck driver be able to stop them?
[Roman] Gramphos: I have read the new FAQ, but it does not say anything about the relative power of units from various eras.
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Cruise Missiles are like other artillery units -- if you don't protect them, any unit can kill them. If he had attacked with the Cruise Missile, the archer would not have shot it down....
[ACS_MarkG] apprently :)
[Taliseian] so, just moving the missile is different than using the equivalent "bombard" command, right ?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Yes, that's right
[ACS_MarkG] reviewers......
[Taliseian] ah....
[JonahFalcon] Mike, I'm sure Firaxis will create an expansion so we can actually have Spaniards, Mongols and Byzantines, right? ;)
[Taliseian] hehehe...someone needs to tell Yin this ;)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Aren't they in AoK? :)
[JonahFalcon] Yes. :p
[Gregurabi] no Mongols??
[JonahFalcon] But AoK isn't Civ III :)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Good point... :)
[JonahFalcon] I know the graphic set for each civ is huge (which is why there are "only" 16 civ sets)
[JonahFalcon] Which leads me to a question:
[LoQtus] that brings up an interesting point: have any of the Firaxians been following the 'Expansion Pack Civs' poll? :)
[Gregurabi] well at least there are Babylonians, unlike a *certain* other company's product...
[JonahFalcon] How huge are each civ's graphic sets?
[JonahFalcon] LoQ: It'll be interesting to see user-made civs
[JonahFalcon] I'm sure gamers will create Spaniards, etc themselves
[Roman] About the editor: Is it possible to make sure resources do not run out + new ones are impossible to appear? Such determinism is useful for historical scenarios.
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] To be honest, I'm not sure how large the graphic sets are.... There are a lot of different graphics of their heads for the different screens and some of them are animated.... And they're not all in the same folders.
[VolcanoHead] There will be an explosion of new civ's in the coming weeks
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Roman: Hang on, I'll check... I don't remember.
[The_Zealot] I will create the Portuguese, if Firaxis doesn't!
[JonahFalcon] Mike: The expressiveness of the heads is amazing, though.
[The_Zealot] but I prefer they use their expertise.. :)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Yeah, too bad no one told the artists that! :)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] There are age specific animations, still frames, and a bunch of end-game images for each leader
[JonahFalcon] The only problem, Volcano, is that you'll have to use existing graphic sets for them
[JonahFalcon] End up with, say, the Portuguese using Julius Caesar's portrait.
[The_Zealot] yeah!:(
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Roman: You can change both the chance of reappearance and the chance of disappearance and you can set them both to 0%.
[The_Zealot] that's what's bothering me...
[ACS_MarkG] Who drawed Alexander the Great like that?!?!?!?? :)
[Roman] Mike: Huray! :b: :)
[JonahFalcon] I wish that Civ III did link with SMAC, as was initially planned.
[StarBegotten] can you add extra civs to bring the number above 16?
[The_Zealot] I thought you did, Mark! :)))
[JonahFalcon] Star: Uh, you can't have more than 16 players.
[StarBegotten] :(
[JonahFalcon] You can have a possible higher CHOICE of players
[JonahFalcon] But not more than 16 in a game
[JonahFalcon] Trust me, 16 is ENOUGH
[StarBegotten] thats what I meant
[Carlos113] and units?
[VolcanoHead] Sure, and this is a good question. Will it be possible to produce new animations? I would imagine this is a non-trivial task...
[JonahFalcon] On a huge map, 16 civs were crowded
[|Mankind|] hi
[StarBegotten] you play it, luck bas...
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] nontrivial to say the least.
[JonahFalcon] So 16 is more than enough. I won't be playing with more than 7 other civs anytime soon
[Gramphos] Mark, I believe they are afraid to tell as you would ban him from Apolyton. ;)
-] *ACS_MarkG* i'm on my lunch break right now, and will have to go back to work soon. . not sure how long this will last, but i'll be able to send you the log after i get home from work, approx 5 hours from now. i'm sure you'll be anxious to post it, but that's the soonest i can get it to you.
[JonahFalcon] Javier: Why not turn off the 3D animated heads as you could turn off the avatars in Civ II?
[LoQtus] jonah: you should try CtP: 32 civs per game! :) must have a VERY fast system though and a very big map :)
[JonahFalcon] Simply give the option to have a 2D portriat instead?
[Patrick_Dawson] Im playing a huge world 16 civ game right now, and resources are tough to come by -- I am the French and I can't get my hands on saltpeter to make any Muketeers. :(
[JonahFalcon] Patrick: JOIN THE CLUB!
[connorkimbro] LoQtus: and you also must have a high tolerance of boredom. :)
[JonahFalcon] I played CtP. It sucked. Next question.
[Roman] Is it possible to customize wonders/improvements? What effects are available (if there are too many, I would welcome a 'wild' example)?
[JonahFalcon] Yes, Roman
[JonahFalcon] And you can affect a LOT
[LoQtus] no, connor, it's FUN! (IMHO)
[JonahFalcon] Let me enter the Editor now
[The_Zealot] Another player not finding Salt Peper?!?!? I'm getting worried... :/
[Gramphos] Is it possible to change a major wonder into a minor and vice versa.
[StarBegotten] is there event scripting for scenarios?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] At the moment, no you can't add more than 16 but this is something we're looking at correcting. Another graphics problem like the one I mentioned above. The existing FLC code had a bug that encodes them incorrectly and we didn't discover this until it was too late so we are working on a fix as we speak.
[Patrick_Dawson] I found saltpeter, just every instance is claimed, I have to take it by force
[JonahFalcon] Saltpeter can only be found in deserts, tundra, mountains
[ACS_MarkG] Mike, can you tell us what's the deal with MP? Why is it not in?
[JonahFalcon] All the inhospitable places, Patrick
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] we're looking at a bunch of different ways of handling art for leaders, units, and the rest of the things everyone wants to modify
[JonahFalcon] Well, duh, Patrick. Everyone wants gunpowder ;)
[LoQtus] aas you speak, you're coding and chatting at the same time 8) ;)
[Roman] Thanks JonahFalcon - you have mercy on a European who will have to wait a while to get the game. ;)
[Gramphos] Mike, isn't it hard to program in the same time as you chat, as you risk to send some code instead. ;)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] shh....
[The_Zealot] lol
[JonahFalcon] There are 22 options for Big Wonders
[LoQtus] :D
[JonahFalcon] 18 toggles of on/off
[JonahFalcon] and 4 scroll-down options
[Roman] aha, thenks :b:
[connorkimbro] to the Firaxians, it was a pleasure chatting with you, i'll be reading over the logs of this chat later, as I have to go now. Thanks for stopping by and chatting with us, and again, Congratulations on Civ3's release! :)
[LoQtus] bye connor
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Re MP: We wanted to have the game done this year (it was already 2+ years in development) and we didn't feel we could have a great SP and MP game in that time frame. So we decided that SP was more important. To that end we decided to concentrate solely on SP and deal with MP later.
[VolcanoHead] Well I for one am grateful you got the working game out quickly, and didn't wait to include all the mods people are demanding. We would never see the game otherwise. Was it a clear choice for you?
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] thank you for having us ;-)
[JonahFalcon] There are an additional 10 options for "small" Wonders
[VolcanoHead] ah. thanks.
[ACS_MarkG] Thank you Mike for the answer! So i guess MP will be an expansion pack?
[JonahFalcon] The more powerful Editing tool, IMHO, is the Government editor
[JonahFalcon] Very flexible
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] I can neither confirm nor deny that ;)
[JonahFalcon] Don't be silly, MarkG.
[JonahFalcon] He's not going to reveal an expansion pack NOW
[Roman] Are there any screenshots?
[JonahFalcon] hehehe
[ACS_MarkG] Hey, i had to ask! :D
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] We're not sure, we're just indians, the chiefs make those decisions
[JonahFalcon] For example, I KNOW there will be an expansion to Heroes IV
[Icewind] Hello everyone
[JonahFalcon] But Gus ain't gonna tell me about it
[zenith] guys, nice game u have build.... i love it
[zenith] great work!
[Gramphos] They will probably wait until next E3 with any info on MP
[|Mankind|] ACS_MarkG: DanQ will come here?
[ACS_MarkG] Mike, i suppose time issue also cut out the scenarios you were planning?
[ACS_MarkG] DanQ wasnt able to make it
[JonahFalcon] Mike: There is a greater leap between Civ II and Civ III than Civ I and Civ II. I had to really change some of my thinking for Civ III.
[|Mankind|] ;(
[JonahFalcon] For example...
[JonahFalcon] I found myself building Wonders closer to my borders near other Civs.
[JonahFalcon] Just to push the borders and make 'em jealous
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Yes. We figured having a working game was more important and by the time the editor was ready to go we had already committed to a release date.
[MadLordSnapcase] Now?
[JonahFalcon] And to maybe coerce them into thinking Mom and Apple Pie were better than their borscht. hehehe
[Gramphos] Firaxis will keep MP for themself. ;) Not telling us about it.
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] We had a few scenarios made, but not enough testing to make sure they were releasable
[StarBegotten] will the scenarios be available for download later?
[JonahFalcon] I'm sure those scenarios will be free downloads in a bit
[ACS_MarkG] Do you happen to have any graphics ready that were made for scenarios and could be posted for mod makers?
[StarBegotten] how many had you planned on releasing with the game?
[ACS_MarkG] 12, i think
[StarBegotten] 12 scenarios?
[ACS_MarkG] yes
[|Mankind|] and may i ask why sid don't post on apolyton?;)
[StarBegotten] cool!
[LoQtus] that's what the website said...
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] Some of them may pop up on websites, I'm not sure where they are.
[JonahFalcon] So long as you included Earth, I'm happy :)
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Sid's too busy making the games.... ;)
[StarBegotten] lol
[|Mankind|] blablabla:-D
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] So what are we doing....
[JonahFalcon] Mike, here is a SPECIFIC editor question:
[|Mankind|] one post is not a big problem.....
[zenith] Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS: will there be plans for a civ4 in the future?
[JonahFalcon] How do I import my own Advance graphics?
[Gregurabi] Javier: Public Relations is important :)
[|Mankind|] civ4?????!?
[Patrick_Dawson] I was browsing around the art and such, and tried to open menucow.pcx, but it wouldn't open. Is this a mistake?
[|Mankind|] civ3 first8-)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] That's a question for infogrames zenith. ;-)
[JonahFalcon] Uh, Civ 3 is two days old
[zenith] just curious JonahFalcon
[JonahFalcon] You want Civ 4 now?
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] ?
[|Mankind|] ok and may i ask why DanQ is not posting in civ3-general?;)
[zenith] oke
[zenith] going to play it now
[zenith] bye
[The_Zealot] ok, ppl
[|Mankind|] cu
[The_Zealot] I have to go
[ACS_MarkG] Mankind, mail him and ask.
[|Mankind|] cu
[The_Zealot] nice talking to you
[JonahFalcon] Mike: Got the answer yet?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] The editor doesn't have built-in graphics editing support (there are many commercial programs that do graphics editing) but you can replace the tech icon graphics. They are PCX files in the tech chooser\icons folder
[|Mankind|] yes it's a gfood idea;)
[The_Zealot] thanks to everybody from FIRAXIS
[MadLordSnapcase] I thought the chat was going to be at 21:00!
[|Mankind|] hi guest;))))))))))))
[JonahFalcon] I know THAT
[JonahFalcon] I have a paint program
[Gramphos] Well if it will take three other years to make civ 4 they better get started ;)
[|Mankind|] no
[JonahFalcon] Replace?
[JonahFalcon] I don't want to REPLACE the graphics
[LoQtus] MadLord: Markos thinks GMT means Greek Mean Time ;)
[JonahFalcon] I want to append the graphics for a MOM inspired scenario
[|Mankind|] you have 1 years holiday;)
[MadLordSnapcase] Has it already been on for an hour, then?
[ACS_MarkG] As for other "Avault issue": nukes are that a serious weapon(diplomatically) or something like that?
[LoQtus] yes
[Gramphos] He changed it to real gmt after that
[JonahFalcon] Aren't nukes a serious issue NOW diplomatically, Mark?
[JonahFalcon] LOL
[Gramphos] but it still has the greek meaning in the newsitem
[LoQtus] too late for many pp, Gramphos
[Mid^Seier] yes
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] I don't know... I nuked a civ and everyone in the world declared war on me within 2 turns -- including a civ with only 1 city....
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] So I nuked them too
[JonahFalcon] hahaha
[ACS_MarkG] reviewers......
[VolcanoHead] :)
[Mid^Seier] 2 hours ago it would be an acpetable time....
[Taliseian] hehehe
[Mid^Seier] what?!
[LoQtus] lol :)
[Mid^Seier] nuke=war wit all?!?!?!
[StarBegotten] so nukes are used less often by the AI in civ3?
[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] Well not necessarily... I didn't have any alliances in that game
[JonahFalcon] Bad Mike.\
[ACS_MarkG] Can you loose a game due to too much pollution?
[Mid^Seier] always using of nulke=war?
[Mid^Seier] ...beter do civ4;)
[Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis1] Not necesarily, though pollution will cause global warming and render tiles useless
[ACS_MarkG] Are polluted tiles easily "cleared"?
