Civ3 1.21 Chat Friday, April 19, 2002

2 Months and 4 days after the second, the third civ3 patch was released and we were right here to share our experiences from the changes along with several Firaxians

[GHOB] once again a question asked before regarding the minimap :) i used to create scenarios for age of empires

[GHOB] and the lag of mini map in civ3 is very hard
[SorenJohnson] at this point, most the new features (such as bomabrd-kill) will appear via the editor...

[Gramphos] It isn't mush more then that, all after are one less Game Concepts=MENU_INDEX and so on, Resource Index can't be linked to.

[Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS] We get advances from publishers for specific products, which pay for all development. Upon ship we pay back those advances with royalties before we get a cut ourselves. The development we're doing now is funded by unannounced projects

[ixnay37] what is the point of the "current civ" thing in the editor as of now? I can see how in future upgrades it will be useful for placing units, cities, and whatnot, but I can't seem to find anything to use it for now except to place barbarian tribes with different names, since placing starting locations with current civ didn't seem to affect anything.

[Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS] It reminds me of SMAC....you get something by being so candid, but it has some built in risks. Firaxis doesn't have it's own forums for instance, which was directly related to SMAC experience. I wish them the best regardless..

[Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS] Well, pre-release, forums are always plesant. The issue is after the honeymoon and the reality of the game has to complete with the insubstantial 'dream' versino of the game...thats where the trouble starts...

[Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS] One example of a limitation that we removed was the fact that you couldn't have more than 24 resource icons. And there are numerous places in the code with similar issues.

[Mizaq] Hi! Currently on the CivFanatics Forums there are several people working on a Star Wars Mod. However, that mod could Foxxed at any time by LucasArts. Has there been any discussion with LucasArts about making a Star Wars turn based game along the lines of Civilization? ---Or would you not be allowed to leak even a hint of this project being discussed?

[SirPleb] How does Firaxis feel about utilities, add-ons, mods developed by others? Will Firaxis condone (perhaps even help a bit by publishing some info about file formats?), fight, or ignore the development of such tools? What about the reverse-engineering involved in such tools? What if an addon/mod were sold instead of free, would that make a difference?

[SirPleb] About changed gameplay: is there anything known in the patch which could be causing slower initial expansion by the AIs? In two test games so far (huge,deity) the AIs seem to me to be noticeably slower to explore/expand.
