Civ3 PtW Chat, September 20, 2002
Waiting for the expansion of Civilization 3 we had a chat with several Firaxians. The took place in both our irc channel and the web chat
In red, the operator. In
blue, Firaxis team members. Many thanks to
Jeff Morris, Barry Caudill, Soren Johnson, Javier Sobrado and Mike Breitkreutz

<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS>
Whoa! a nifty lookin' + thingie!!
<m_m_x> hi mark
<DavidDuke> FIRAXIS, Guerilla?
Will it have some special options like it should be (maybe more defense on
forests/mountains, etc.)
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> Joining this chat is almost is tedious as
making multiplayer work in civ3!
<Theseus> Mike, have you locked down the stats for Med. Infantry and
Guerilla?
<m_m_x> lol
<BellaHella> lol
<[FN]Nikolai> mike: want to tell us about it?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> The Guerilla is
basically an alternative to Infantry without the resource requirements
<Pggar> Will we be able to make railroads have less than infinite movement?
<\\xor\\> What are the Beserker stats going to be?
<Speed_Bump> Theseus: Nothing is ever written in stone...
<m_m_x> mike -are we gonna have some real progress/revolution in pnw
editor?
<DavidDuke> Thanjks for an answer
<Theseus> Mike, re the Guerilla, in some of the screenshots it had different
stats though... 6-1-1 IIRC.
<Speed_Bump> Theseus: 6-6-1
<Theseus> Speed_Bump, is that going to be this chat's equivalent of
"no comment"? (Just kidding)
<Speed_Bump> Theseus: No comment ;-)
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> wow...is this worked?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> working?
<astrologix> hi
<Theseus> Thanks!
<\\xor\\> welcome Jeff.
<Weduku> As always
<Theseus> How about the Medieval Infantry?
<ACS_MarkG> so the apolyton chat is still slow
for you?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Hey!
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Fun
<Speed_Bump> Theseus: 4-2-1 iirc
<m_m_x> mark can we ask now?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Ridiculous.
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> Apolyton is very laggy for me...
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> but I'm trying to monitor both
<DavidDuke> Is this true that there will be no fog of war in PtW as
Jeff just said on other chat?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Shoot mmx!
<Weduku> I think that's in cheat mode only, David
<m_m_x> let me aim first
<m_m_x> to many firxian here
<Rhye1> an important question: any chance to disable or change city
flipping?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Only if you use
cheat mode within the editor.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Yep, you can disable it.
<ColdFever> In the last chat Firaxis told us that mods can have their
own directories - what kind of files can we put in there, I mean what files
does the engine recognize as mods so that they do indeed replace the original
files?
<DavidDuke> Thanks for the answer
<m_m_x> somthing i realy wanted to ask before and i forget-will u guys
thinking of making civ game to pocket pc's devices??
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Dave: Sure
<m_m_x> kinda off topic..
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: Anything's possible.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: We've thought about it.
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> ColdFever> You
can put anything from the Art, Sounds, and Text folders in your scenario
folder. You can also set up a search path in the editor to have your scenario
look in another scenario's folders
<Theseus> Great idea, m_m_x, you trying to destroy my life?
<BellaHella> ???? will there be any new terraforming options
????
<Pggar> Will we be able to make railroads have less than infinite movement?
<ColdFever> great, thanks
<m_m_x> hehe
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Pggar: No.
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> The only new terraforming options are building
outposts, radar towers, and airfields
<\\xor\\> Will there be changes of any kind to Global Warming?
<DavidDuke> Jeff, because I always like air force the most in all strategic
games I'd like to ask the following: will there be any improvements on air
force side (except radars and airbases; like new missions for planes, new
types of planes, changed stats for planes, etc.)?
<BellaHella> thanks
<ACS_MarkG> jeff, we need real photos of firaxians
with civ3 t-shirts, not graphics
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> xor: No.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Longer ranges, auto bombing, auto precision
bombing come to mind.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: K.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: Email lindsay!
<ACS_MarkG> btw, how where the 3d models of your
faces done for the advisors graphics? 3d-face-scanner?
<DavidDuke> Does auto-bombing means that plane automatically always
bombs a certain tile (city for example) or does that means it automatically
carpet-bombs all tiles one after another which are in the range?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Same tile.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: A single artist, Jerome Atherholt.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: By hand.
<Theseus> Same tile by multiple units right? When does it stop?
<ACS_MarkG> wow
<BellaHella> ???? if there aren't going to be any new civ traits,
will the new civs be any different from the old ones (not counting UU)
????
<Theseus> In autobombing, Can you select for
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> It will stop bombing if a friendly unit is
in that tile tho (or at least ask you if it should continue)
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Theseus: Right. When
you tell it to.
<m_m_x> did u guys saw the blizzard countdown last night?that was amazing
marketing....can we expect somthing like that on your next project?
<Theseus> Sorry... in autobombing, can you select for units versus improvements?
<ACS_MarkG> Is there going to be another patch
for regular civ3 before or shortly after ptw?
<DavidDuke> Will Mohammad, Nasser or Saladin be the leader of Arabs
<ACS_MarkG> mmx, firaxis already has done that
with dinosaurs
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Bella: Different art,
city lists, hero lists, etc..
<DavidDuke> Oh no, another netsplit
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> Thes: it works as bombing/bombard work currently,
only it is automated to repeat each turn
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: I wouldn't put it
past INforgrames marketing.
<m_m_x> realy?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Yeah, they ripped us
off!
<ColdFever> What happens if you loose a participant in a multiplayer
game?
<m_m_x> i didnt knew...
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Cold: If you don't want
to load, they're obliterated.
<ACS_MarkG> mmx, search the news archive.... http://apolyton.net/news
<m_m_x> k
<Theseus> I thought there would be an option to replace a player with
an AI...
<ACS_MarkG> Jeff, Is there going to be another
patch for regular civ3 before or shortly after ptw?
<DavidDuke> So, will Mohammad, Nasser or Saladin be the leader of Arabs
<DavidDuke> ?
<ColdFever> Jeff: you mean all towns and units vanish from the map?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> theseus: You can on load.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Cold: Ruins
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: No.
<ACS_MarkG> the "civ3 game of the year" edition
with have 1.29 patch, right?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: Yes.
<Carlos113> Jeff: you mean there wont be any patch at all?
<Theseus> Got it. So, what's the most fun of the new game types, e.g.,
Regicide?
<DavidDuke> Jeff: will there be more city improvements in modern era
despite of internet (I mean ones like TV tower, radio mast, without which
our life would seems quite different nowadays)?
<Weduku> So if a player gets disconnected, his civ is wiped out?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Carlos113: Not for Civ3.
Maybe for Ptw, but I hope not.
<m_m_x> how long a game on normal map with 4-6 players goes with the
new "turnless" mode?
<Pggar> ruins are any different from the regular terrain, do they give
any bonus?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Theseus: I like elimination.
<LoQtS> Waw, things are quiet here compared tot the forum chat. Not
surprisingly, it was near impossible to connect to any DALnet server...
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Pggar: No, though maybe
in the future. I like the idea of them conferring defensive bonuses.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Weduku: Unless everyone rejoins.
<DavidDuke> Jeff, so could I ask my question?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> MMX: If yhou're talking
about winning by space race or something, in the 10-15 hours range.
<Theseus> Cool idea for defense in ruins!! Be great to apply that specifically
for guerillas!
<Weduku> Crazy... CTP had dynamic join/exit with AI taking the player's
place and vice versa
<m_m_x> sorry jeff i ment to a multiplay game...
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: There are stock
exchange, commercial docks, and civil defense, but they're industrial./
<player1> hey, this works
<DavidDuke> Hi player1
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: So did I.
<DavidDuke> Thanks for the answer
<Theseus> Did you get waypoints working?
<m_m_x> k-kinda long...
<Pggar> can we implement a invisible by terrain thigy with the editor?
Like Guerrillas would have hidden nationality when they're over forests.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: Try it with elimination
on, much shorter...also, you can limit the game by a specific time, like
1 hour, and after that a winner is determined.
<ACS_MarkG> Jeff do you plan to do any tournaments
or stuff like that?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> afk
<m_m_x> nice..
<DavidDuke> Jeff, who will be the leader of Arabs? Nasser, Saladin or
Mohhamed? Or are leaders still undetermined?
<ACS_MarkG> afk?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: Maybe..
<\\xor\\> Will it be possible to start from, say, medieval era instead
of ancient?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Abu Bakr.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> away from keyboard
<ACS_MarkG> oh
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> xor: Yes, with a scenario.
<LoQtS> Markos: n00b!!!
<Theseus> BTW, thank you *so much* for improving the trading interface.
<[FN]Nikolai> how many scenarios will PTW be released with? and what
will those be?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Theseus: We add the ability
to see existing deals in PTW outside of diplomacy.
<DavidDuke> OK, but will for example you be able to create such a scenario,
starting from modern era with 4x time required to research and then normal
game with normal victory contitions, etc.?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Nik: Including maps,
about 40+
<[FN]Nikolai> not bad!
<\\xor\\> Beserker=5/3/1+amphibious?
<m_m_x> whats the beta team feedback on ptw?are they happy?was it different
then the beta u had before civ3 went out?
<Theseus> Yeah, I saw one of the diplo screenshots... well done!!
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Not sure what
you mean. You could enable acceleratede production, or reduce the costs of
advances, etc.
<Pggar> Which of you guys are participating in the PCGamer multiplayer
contest with Sid? Are you guys practicing a lot?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: They were very
valuable. Overall they liked what we did. They always had suggestions on
what we could do, but that's the cool thing about suggestions. You don't
have to actually do them
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> pggar: I never heard about that till I saw it
on poly. I imagine I will, though who knows.
<m_m_x> hehe
<ACS_MarkG> "You don't have to actually do them"
jeff, what a cruel and insesntive comment!
<DavidDuke> Jeff, I meant, could you create such a scenario, just like
normal game (same everything including victory conditions and the start of
the game (only one settler at start)), but instead of starting at medieval
start at modern era with scenario editor?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> xor: That sounds right.
Definately amphib.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Yes. It's a scenario properties setting
rather than a rule change.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Markg: Yeah. The product wouldn't be as good as
it is if it wasn't for their suggestions.
<ACS_MarkG> what's your favorite new UU?
<\\xor\\> Eh, sorry, let me restate the question, what exaclty will
be the Beserker stats? (if they have been already decided).
<Theseus> Are civ-specific abilities on or off in MP? Is it a choice?
If on, what civs are people picking?
<m_m_x> the unit pack-i know there are ww2 units,some dinosaur,what
else?and how many?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> xor and Markg: 6-2-1
Berzerk.
<Theseus> 6-2-1?? I thought it was a replacement for Longbowmen?
<ColdFever> It would be great if some ruins would release a dinosaur
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: Medieval japan
<DavidDuke> Jeff, will you be able to lenghten the game with scenario
editor (like double or quadruple time required to go to 2050 by raising number
of turns, to like 2/4 turns per year since 1950, 1/2 before, etc.) but leave
all rules the same (except maybe doubling or quadrupling time rquired for
research)?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> thesus: Game option at
start, or configurable via scenario
<Zahury> there are new strategic resources?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Theseus: For balanced
games, it makes sense to disable them.
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> DavidDuke> You have full control over
the timeline of the game using the editor.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Zahury: No.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> 10 minute warning
<\\xor\\> Can you tell us something about bandwidth requirements? how
much can people play on a 56K line? what type of game would require broadband?
<m_m_x> civ3 and ptw have diffrent type of save games?will i b able
to load civ3 game in ptw?
<Zahury> thanks
<LoQtS> probably asked before but how many scenarios does PTW come with?
<DavidDuke> 40+ LoQtS
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: yes.
<[FN]Nikolai> included maps, 40+ they said
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> loq: including maps 40+,
<Hagbart> How do you choose the leader of a civ?
<m_m_x> :))!!
<LoQtS> I bet those won't be Harlan-like epic works then...
<DavidDuke> Will you be able to set starting positions on pre-designed
maps like the world with scenario editor (for example, would I be able to
palce real starting positions on the world map)?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> david: Yes.
<Hagbart> You can download all the maps you want to from Apolyton mmx
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Hagbart: One that interests
me, seems appropriate, one the artists are interested in doing, and other
considerations.
<DavidDuke> Will a limit on civs per game still be 16 or 24 now?
<\\xor\\> I have a world map with said real starting position in Civ3,
you need 1.29 patch.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: 31 playable in
single player, 8 in MP
<LoQtS> CtP2 came (among other things) with an Alexander the Great
scenario - this was an epic work with countless events and an elaborate storyline,
many thought it was better than the game itself (yes, Harlan made it :))
- will PTW have something like that or will it just be maps with fixed civs/starting
positions?
<ACS_MarkG> loqts: the second...
<ACS_MarkG> plus the unit packs
<DavidDuke> Will all the leaders of countries which were in Civ3 remain
the same (won't you change Joan of Arc to Napoleon, for example?)
<LoQtS> not that I want to keep comparing Civ3 with CtP2, just curious
:cute:
<Zahury> will make traps the AI in PTW? :)
<m_m_x> is there a cd key to play on line?
<\\xor\\> Will everyone play his turn at the same time in MP or is
it one person first, then the next? (I read something about simultaneous
turn but I didnt quite understand it).
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Loq: It'll have some
fairly elaborate scenarios from the community.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: For the most part. Genghis isn't a chinese
leader anymore for instance.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> xor: both, there are numerous ways to play.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: Probably not.
<m_m_x> continue from previous qustion-how many ppl can play with one
copy of the game (lan game)?
<DavidDuke> 31 playable civs at a time? So then you'd have to choose
some civs multiple times, right?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Zah: Not sure I understand
the question..
<LoQtS> cool. will have to check those out then some time :o
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: 1
<Theseus> Any further tweaks to the AI?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Only unique civs.
You'd have to create new ones with the dtior.
<Carlos113> Jeff: Zah means if the will cheat
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Carlos: They cheat.
<Gramphos> Hi
<DavidDuke> Will you be able to change/remove leader heads on scenarios?
For example, if you are creating WW2 scenario it would be not realistic at
all to hav Lincoln as leader of USA, Bismarck - of Germany, Chaterine - of
Soviet Union, Ceasar - of Italy, etc.
<Gramphos> Got some problems geting here
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Theseus: Lots, some
about new terrain improvments, some about city improvemsnt, some about new
unit abilitiesl.
<ACS_MarkG> hey master of the directory
<Carlos113> ok
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: Yes.
<Gramphos> The ship got delayed two hours due
to winds.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Running out of time...any
last burning questions?
<LoQtS> Markos: you're sorta contradicting Jeff, so the truth is probably
somewhere in the middle...
<LoQtS> ah well, noone can surpass Harlan, I suppose
<panag> please unlock all fields guys !!!!!!
<Theseus> Do you have any tips about creating what we call "killer AI
civs?"
<m_m_x> can i add new animation on the map with the ptw editor?
<ColdFever> Will diplomacy be handled in multiplayer the same as we
know from Civ3 single player?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> mmx: Don't think so.
Theseus: Not sure what you mean.
<\\xor\\> Will paratroopers be able to jump from airbase tile improvement?
or from non-airbase cities?
<DavidDuke> So you can draw your leader heads if new civ possibility
is added, right? Is some small 3D editor added for that to add all smilies,
etc. in civ3? Also, will you be able to create your own Unique Units on new
civs? Or change UUs? For example, from F-15 to B-27 for USA in WW2 scenario?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Cold: Slightly differently,
namely you don't place what your opponent can offer on the table for him.
It's up to him.
<ACS_MarkG> burning question: where do you get
your civ3 rocks???
<ACS_MarkG> and when will you sell on the civ3 store outside the US?
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> David: You would need
your own graphics editor. We don't provide that.
<ColdFever> It would be nice if the sum of gold I have would be a secret
- as in real life
<Gramphos> I got a Civ3 rock
<ACS_MarkG> gramphos: got a photo??
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Well, thanks for all
your interest in our game guys. We're getting close to finished here so you
should all be playing soon. Keep the feedback coming and I'll see you around.
<Jeff_Morris_FIRAXIS> Thanks.
<panag> Mark , check the store site
<Theseus> Sorry, Jeff. We have been playing with build preferences to
get stronger AI opponenents... any thoughts?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> ColdFever> You
can't see your opponent's side of the table so you don't know what they have
<Gramphos> Maybe...
<panag> they all look the same
<ACS_MarkG> thanks for your time and patience
jeff!
<Theseus> Didn;t even give us time to say goodbye!!
<panag> they where for sale at ebay 4 months ago
<LoQtS> we all did
<ACS_MarkG> noone posted anything in the forums
about them
<panag> yes , we did , a long time ago Mark !
<m_m_x> i realy hope to see civ game on pocketpc...cya all...
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> David: you can create
your own civ heads and unique units, but we can
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> .
<panag> chack the store , the have great caps also !!!! and mugs , its
really good Quality
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> can't provide
you with tools to do so
<panag> and that paperweight rock is really beautifull !!!!!
<panag> only a bit expensive
<ColdFever> Thanks and "Good Night" from Germany, bye
<Gramphos> Well, I got mine ten months ago.
<panag> almost twice from what it was a ebay , ........
<DavidDuke> Well, you can create a log now maybe from this chat?
<\\xor\\> Mark, I got a log, want it?
<DavidDuke> Log of both chats I meant
<panag> Mike , please unlock the other fields in the editor
<ACS_MarkG> np xor, i got one
<Theseus> How will the Koreans generate GLs?
<DavidDuke> If you want answers for more questions goes to forum chat,
mike is still andwering them there
<\\xor\\> MarkG, want log?
<LoQtS> A little late, Markos
<panag> and some want a bigger map , like 300X300
<\\xor\\> Will paratroopers be able to jump from airbase tile improvement?
or from non-airbase cities?
<\\xor\\> It's something I couldnt even edit...
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> panag> I'm still
playing with the map size but the largest it can be (after some preliminary
tests) is 362x362 and it takes 3 minutes to generate a map of that size in
the editor (though they do look cool)
<panag> store.civ3.com Mark , check it out
<panag> Mike , that perfect
<panag> please give it to us
<ACS_MarkG> i've the store panag....
<panag> 362X362 , whoaaaah , man that going to rock
<ACS_MarkG> ...seen...
<panag> we dont mind to wait
<DavidDuke> Mike, will there be a already drawn world map in that size
(362x362)?
<panag> we did a poll , out of 273 people 251 agreed to a bigger map
!
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> DavidDuke> no
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> We will not provide any maps of that size
<panag> well there are enough people who shall make a worldmap on that
scale
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> panag> You will
get that size if it doesn't cause any problems. I don't want to go monkeying
with the code at this point to make bigger maps work so I'm testing to make
sure they are ok
<DavidDuke> It's quite hard - I once tried to make 240x240 world map
but it ended up that Africa was more to south than South America :)
<panag> well , give it as a download only then !
<LoQtS> why is there a max on mapsize anyhow? CtP doesn't have one...
(sorry, I'll try not to mention that game again...)
<panag> if you need testing on them , with pleasure !
<DavidDuke> I believe 362x362 is the maxsize
<panag> 131044 squares to fill , okay it shall be done
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> panag> half that
actually: 65522
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> a decision was made
long ago to store tile IDs on a WORD, that limits map sizes to 65536 tiles
<panag> huh ?
<panag> okay
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> because of the isometric
tile system the number of tiles on a map is height X width / 2
<panag> hmm, and that cant be chaged ?
<\\xor\\> I suspected it was something conected with index variable
lenght.
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> not without breaking
things, unfortunately
<panag> so , how would you build a map that size then ?
<LoQtS> why a word, what's wrong with a long? it makes the fans so much
happier and it hardly costs more work to code...
<panag> okay , 300X300 then ?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> LoQtS> As Javier
said, that was made LONG ago, LONG before we even had an editor.
<\\xor\\> a word is a variable that the CPU can process much faster,
I suspect...
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> 362x362 gives you
65522 :) and as to why, i wasn't an employee at firaxis at the time it was
made
<DavidDuke> Yes Panag, on some scens I might want lower x value in
percent of y value... Also, would it be possible to create a map without
possibility to get from one end to the other (non whole world map)?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> DavidDuke> Yes,
you can make flat maps and even toroidal worlds now
<LoQtS> yes, I understand. but why was it done so back then? it's never
a bad idea to prevent yourself from running into limits like this - not with
the PC power we have today...
<\\xor\\> a dword... dont know...
<panag> Javier , what does that mean , we get 5 hills on on tile then
or so ?
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> 5 hills on tile?
<panag> or when we draw it , we have to work in pairs
<panag> yes , concrete , how does this limit affect it ?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> The limit means
the map can have no more than 65536 tiles
<panag> since 362X362 aint 65522 , so , where is the loss ?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> Tiles are interleaved,
turn the grid on and you will see
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> 362 x 362... interleaving
means you have 2 362 * 181 squares
<panag> so if the map size is 362X362 we still get only 65522 tiles
, is that what you mean ?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> panag> yes
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> hold on...
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> for example, in 100x100 map you have 5000
tiles
<panag> okay , thanks Mike -Javier
<panag> okay
<panag> keep talking
<\\xor\\> Will airbase give defense?
<panag> Mike ?
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> sorry you willl have
essentially two grids of 181x181 tiles interleaved, 2*181*181 = 65522
<panag> hmmm , okay ,
<LoQtS> ain't map formats wonderful things?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> xor> I don't
think so
<\\xor\\> K, will there be any changes to the existing units?
<panag> so , can it be done , it is feasable ? can it be done then ?
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> LoQtS> as to why the original tile indices
were done that way -- I don't think the original programmer even gave a thought
to expandability but I can't answer for him....
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> xor> A few graphical changes but most
original units remain unchanged. Although a few air units now have increased
operational range.
<panag> who programmed it first ?
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> panag: as mike said we are testing 362x362
to make sure it does not break anything in the game
<LoQtS> grrmmbl... silly amateur... (j/k)
<panag> well , Javier , Mike , if you want testers , you got them !
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> panag> No comment.
And it wasn't someone still works here.
<\\xor\\> The connection protocol: If I create a game with a scenario,
will the people who connect be distributed the scenario or will the scenario
have to be pre-distributed?
<Chieftess> I'll apply as a tester too. (nearly forgot the chat!)
<panag> tsss , Mike you are to good ! , anyway , do you believe that
you can do it , improve it ?
<Chieftess> I had a question from someone over at CFC (don't know if
it's been answered), but it was from Octivian X who wanted to know if current
civ saves can be played with PTW.
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> panag> It can
be improved but I don't want to mess with it this close to release as it's
a risky change
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> Chieftess> yes
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> xor> If the scenario contains only modified
data (i.e., bix file) it will be transferred automatically. If it contains
graphics and/or sounds, you have to predistribute it because it is too large
to send
<LoQtS> would take a LOT of type casts probably...
<panag> hmm , okay , well go for download only then , .......or , do
more testing , .....
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> LoQtS> No I'd
just change the data types
<panag> there are some people who even complain that they have to wait
10 min with a small map and 5 civs , ...
<DavidDuke> Will anymore diplomacy options be availaible?
<LoQtS> well, still a lot of data type changes then...
<panag> yet , panag can play 24 on 256X256 with 1 min in between turns
, .....
<panag> so a download would be a nice solution
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> Panag doesn't run
on a min-spec machine then, lol
<\\xor\\> I have seen like 10 second delays each time I cut a trade
route (pillage road, bomb harbor), but it does not seem very connected to
map size.
<panag> lol
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> panag> which
is why I'm looking into providing the increased map size... though I did
say it took 3 full minutes to generate a map of that size on a machine that's
well above min spec....
<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> which is why it won't be a default option
<panag> well , 3 min is next to nothing if you see what you get for
it
<panag> there are people who play for weeks on one map
<Chieftess> Months even (like Aeson's ICS games)
<DavidDuke> I have Pentium 4 1700 Mhz with Geforce 3 and 528MB RAM :)
<panag> 3 min , is worth every second of it , because you get something
special
