I spent the entire night last night installing Vista on my system, only to discover that Civ 4 wouldn't run on it. I even got a message from Vista stating that there was a known compatibility problem with the game. But I seem to recall that the game played just fine on vanilla Vista, it's just the addition of SP1 that has screwed things up. I've since gone back to XP, because there's no way I'm going to run an OS that won't let me play Civ.

Vista SP1 works for mine; but I not that my new notebook was only bought in August (during the sales tax holiday) and so SP1 was already pre installed. (And all the drivers)
My guess is that the SP1 upgrade you took didn't include the driver and/or BIOS updates they need for SP1. But check the website of your manufactor. In the case of my previous notebook it took six months after the release of XP SP2 for all the driver and BIOS updated needed for it to be released.
