I read the New Zealand site (short) preview and for once, a journalist writes about expanded diplomacy. I am REALLY looking forward reading more about that - with other colonial powers, with the fatherland, with the Amerindians...

You would assume, being based off Civ4 engine that at a minimum you could do all of what is possible in Civ4. Hopefully with the differences in trade there's more diplo options there though. Would also like to see some different war stances (colonial war, all out war, skirmish, etc).

Increase Your PM Length

One thing you have to see is inter-tribal wars independantly of european actions. Also, the possibility of alliance with a tribe against another tribe or against another European power. And then, alliances between European powers.

Explorations HAS GOT to be a little more difficult - cost a lot or need the help of the Amerindians...
