Welcome to the Apolyton Civ4-Beyond the Sword Tri-League Tournament introduction thread.

We are running a series of single player games for your enjoyment with the aim of some good natured, competitive fun with some goodies thrown in by Dan and Co. for the winners, losers, movers and shakers......
To help keep things orderly, and to give all comers a reasonable chance of success and recognition we have put in place a three league system
Novices
Intermediates
Advanced
It is our aim to start two games a month, at two week intervals, for each league. Each game will last for 28 days so you have plenty of time to play each game at a leisurely pace.
Each game will be created by the tournament admins and saved on the very first turn and posted in it's own thread. Players are then welcome to download the save and play the game out to its conclusion, whether to victory or defeat in accordance to the rules set out below.
Please remember at all times that it is our aim at Apolyton to promote a fun, friendly, relaxed environment for all to play in. Please keep things good natured, friendly and above all civilized.....

Quick Start.
If you want to jump straight in, here is the rundown for a quickstart.
1.Make sure you are running Beyond the Sword with the latest patch 3.13
2.We ask that you join the Apolyton Beyond the Sword Tri-League Tournament Civgroup
3.Please register (post your Apolyton username) in the League Signup Thread for the League you wish to participate in.
Novice League Signup Thread
Intermediate League Signup Thread
Advanced League Signup Thread
4.Once you have downloaded the opening save, please post your Apolyton username followed by 'started' in the League Game Thread you have chosen to participate in i.e. the same thread you downloaded the save from.
5.
a. Once you have achieved the set victory conditions (or were defeated by any condition other than conquest, after the end game screens, select Wait! Just... one... more... turn... and save the game immediately. This is your final save.
b.If you were defeated by a conquest victory please submit the save from the turn before you were completely conquered as your final save. i.e. If the admins load your submitted save and press 'end turn' the game finishes with the admins being defeated by a conquest victory from an AI.
6.Please email your final save (renamed to include your Apolyton username and League Game name), and your replay file to the email account listed in the League Game Thread. Please include your Apolyton username in the subject line of your email too.
7.Once you have submitted your save please return to the relevant League Game Thread (the thread you downloaded the save from) and post your Apolyton username followed by 'finished' so we are aware that you have completed the game and submitted it to us. If you feel like providing some feedback please select an option in the League Game Thread Poll indicating how much you enjoyed (or otherwise) this particular game. Selecting an option in the poll also stops the poll timer which acts as the game submission timer for you.
8.Once a game submission period has ended a League Game Discussion Thread will be opened by the tournament admins for anyone to discuss any aspect of that game that they wish to. Please do not open discussion threads, or discuss a League Game elsewhere before the game submission period has ended.
9.Please find time to read the full version below at your earliest convenience.

The Full Version
To participate in the Apolyton Beyond the Sword Tri-League Tournament you must have an up to date, fully patched version of Civilization IV : Beyond the Sword. The current version of Beyond the Sword is 3.13. Please find the retail patch here. If you have bought your copy via Steam or Direct2Drive please refer to where you got it from for the latest patch.
We ask that you join the Apolyton Beyond the Sword Tri-League Tournament Civgroup
Leagues
There are three Leagues, one for Novices (played at around Warlord difficulty), one for Intermediates (played at around Prince difficulty) and one for Advanced players (played at around Emperor difficulty).
All leagues are open to all players, but we ask that you chose your initial league intelligently, based on your perceived level of experience. You are welcome to request a move up or down a league after your first, or subsequent, game.
Each league has a topped League Directory Thread acting as a directory for that particular league. All information and threads relating to that league will be contained in the League Directory Thread (e.g. Novices Directory Thread). Clicking on a link in a League Directory Thread will direct you to that particular thread you are interested in.
Please register (post your Apolyton username) in the League Signup Thread for the League you wish to participate in, (e.g. Novices League Signup Thread). This will enable us to keep track of who is playing in which league.
Novice League Signup Thread
Intermediate League Signup Thread
Advanced League Signup Thread
You may only participate in one League at any given time.
If you wish to move between one league and another after completing a game please post in the Changing League Thread with your Apolyton username, followed by the league you are currently in, and then the league you wish to move to. (e.g. RobWorham Novice - Intermediate.). This will enable us to quickly and easily see who would like to go up/down a league and adjust our records accordingly.
Changing League Thread
A player may be denied permission to move to a lower league by the tournament admins. This will usually be enforced if a player is known to be an experienced player moving to an easier league to gain some goodies...
A player may be requested to move to a higher league by the tournament admins. This will usually occur if the player repeatedly wins, or scores highly in his current league.
The Opening Save
An opening save will be available for downloading from it's relevant League Game Thread.
Once you have downloaded the opening save, please post your Apolyton username followed by 'started' (e.g. RobWorham started) in the League Game Thread you have chosen to participate in i.e the thread you downloaded the save from. This will enable us to keep a record of who is playing what game and prepare for your eventual final game save.
Please play each League Game once only, saving if need be at the end of each playing session, until you reach a victory or defeat condition.
Exploits
Please do not use any exploit to gain an unfair advantage over your fellow players. You are cheating not only yourself, but all other players and the tournament admins of their precious time and energy.
If you are unsure that an action you may be about to take is an exploit or not, please save your game and contact either Nugog or RobWorham via Private Message before proceeding with any possibly questionable actions.
No exploitive reloading please (i.e. save try a gambit/battle if it fails reload and try again). This includes reloading from a previous save, an autosave, or from the opening save after your initial load in order to gain any unfair advantage whatsoever. Please remember the spirit of fair play, and do not try to gain an unfair advantage over your fellow players.
The Final Save
You may only submit one final save per game, please ensure it is your first attempt at the game, and that it was played without reloads.
Once you have achieved the set victory conditions (or were defeated by any condition other than conquest), after the end game screens, select Wait! Just... one... more... turn... and save the game immediately. This is your final save.
If you were defeated by a conquest victory please submit the save from the turn before you were completely conquered as your final save. i.e. If the admins load your submitted save and press 'end turn' the game finishes with the admins being defeated by a conquest victory from an AI.
Please email your final save (xxx.CivBeyondSwordSave (where xxx is your Apolyton username and League Game Name (e.g RobWorhamNovice#1)) and your replay file (xxx.CivBeyondSwordReplay) to the email account listed in the League Game Thread (the thread you downloaded the save from). Please include your Apolyton username in the subject line of your email too. The final save file is, by default, located in your "My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword/Saves/Single" folder. The Replay file is created automatically at the end of your game and can be found, by default, in your "My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword/Replays" folder.
Once you have submitted your save please return to the relevant League Game Thread (the thread you downloaded the save from) and post your Apolyton username followed by 'finished' (e.g. RobWorham finished) so we are aware that you have completed the game and submitted it to us. If you feel like providing some feedback please select an option in the League Game Thread Poll indicating how much you enjoyed (or otherwise) this particular game.
You will receive confirmation of your successful submission of your save as soon as possible after it is received by the tournament admins.
Although you only need to submit the final save to enter the tournament, you are requested to retain backups of game saves on, or around, 2000BC, 1000BC, 10AD, and 1000AD. These extra saves may be requested by tournament admins to help them establish the validity of any submitted save. Failure to provide these saves may result in a submitted save being excluded from the tournament.
Submissions close 28 days after the opening save has been released, from the time the opening save was first posted in its relevant League Game Thread. Check the League Game Thread Poll timer to see how much time is left before submissions have to be in.
After Game Information
Once a game submission period has ended a League Game Discussion Thread (e.g. Beginners Game #1 Discussion Thread) will be opened by the tournament admins for anyone to discuss any aspect of that game that they wish to. Please do not open discussion threads, or discuss a League Game elsewhere before the game submission period has ended.
Once all submissions have been received and evaluated, results will be posted in the relevant League threads, the Apolyton front page and the Apolyton news page.
Once all submissions have been received and evaluated, goodies will be awarded by Dan to those who have excelled.......
Lastly, if you have any more questions, or need any help with anything regarding this tournament, please don't hesitate to PM Nugog or RobWorham or email us at trileague@apolyton.net and we will do our utmost to help you as soon as possible.
Cheers and enjoy!!!

This looks very interesting. I don't have time to join now, but I'll definitely be thinking about it in the future.
Question: When will this be updated for patch 3.13, now that we know it's coming out soon?
|
|

 |
|
|
Yes - as patches come out all games starting after the patch is released will be the new version.
You could join a league and the civgroup now and start playing later.........

On Episode 26 of PolyCast which Matt (Nugog) guest co-hosts on, there is a discussion at the start of the News about the tournament. In effect, it's a mini-interview about this effort.

it's the "replay" file.
You can find it in the replay-folder of the games\Beyond the Sword folder in your my document map.
It holds the entire log of your game.

frenzyfol, please see post #3 above. It is a long post so scroll down to :
The Final Save
and see the fourth point under the final save which has the text :
quote: Please email your final save (xxx.CivBeyondSwordSave (where xxx is your Apolyton username and League Game Name (e.g RobWorhamNovice#1)) and your replay file (xxx.CivBeyondSwordReplay) to the email account listed in the League Game Thread (the thread you downloaded the save from). |
As CyberShy has pointed out, the final save is just that, a save from your final turn in the game. This enables us to check your score at the end of the game and the year that the game ended - two criteria that we will use to decide who wins the game, who comes second etc.... The replay file enables us to look at your whole game in a highly condensed form so we can check what happened when, when you settled and where, what you built when etc..........
If you need any more help finding it please don't hesitate to repost your concerns.
