I haven't played it (not my genre), but here's some info from the web:
quote: GameSpy, GameStats, and IGN all have the same blurb:
Not all the elements of this game have gelled into a satisfying whole, but it's a worthwhile game for any nautical buff. |
Computer Games Magazine (09/1997) gave it a 3 out of 5.
I do remember vaguely the ads. The graphics looked pretty good for its time. I believe they included nearly every nation that had any semblance of a navy during the period covered, and the ships ranged from small sloops to huge four-masted juggernauts.

If your in the market for a 'tall ship' combar simulator, then i think it's the only decent choice. The second one Age of Sail II seems the best of the bunch from what people have said about it.
I tended to like the pirate themed Sea Dogs type of games that the same publisher released a little later - they also have sailing and combat in old wooden ships but in a pirate rpg type setting.
In that series i would recomend Sea Dogs + the first Pirates of the Caribbean game(by bethesda). The latest Age of Pirates has too many problems imho. If you do think about these games check out the forums at:

For some great mods for these games.
A modern day sailing simulation that is very good is Virtual Sailor:

but it doesn't have classic wooden tall ships, cannons or pirates.

I suppose. But Im tiring of all the sidequests in BG2, and have gotten back to the main plotline, so I should have the end in sight soon. Its getting a little silly playing EU2 repeatedly now that EU3 is out. The world situation has not evolved to the point were Divided Ground isnt depressing.
Now a lot of my gaming time is spent in the same room where POTM is doing her homework, (which means it doubles as making sure shes on task time) AOK and MI4 have been distracting for her, so I tend not to play them in my most abundant gaming time.
Oh, Ive still got HOI, I guess.

actually shes gotten better lately about getting her homework done in her room, but now that im deep into BG2, i dont have the craving to load up AOK or MI4.
Which I guess is an argument against buying Age of Sail. But I do find the management of a war ship in that era fascinating. Maybe later then.

and later it is.
saw it for only $8.49 at Target, figured it wont be on the shelves anymore (the problem with mail ordering games from Amazon, is the shipping charge is too high for a game thats $10 or less, and I cant always find a second title I want from the same store - maybe I should get Steam or something) so I bought it. Age of Sail 2 that is. Shouldnt have any trouble running it on this rig.

Ive finally installed this and played a bit - the scenario where HMS vindictive goes up against 3 smaller USN ships.
This is a wonderful game, just what I wanted. Stuff Id read about in Keegan and Mahan, finally makes sense. And nice 3d graphics, lots of depth, history, totally kewl.

Ive been doing the scenario where 2 US privateers smuggling arms to venezuala go against 3 Spanish ships, and I even running through the line and trying to get upwind cant seem to beat them (on medium difficulty) I will have to try this as the Spanish.

Its seems these first 20 or (!!!) numbered scenarios are the quasi tutorials, to lead you up throught differente skills. The unnumbered ones are the historical scenarios. Than there are the RPGish campaigns.
Ive done the French vs Haitian privateer scen, won as French, just barely lost as privateer. If youre going to break the line, you have to do it BEFORE they damage your sails, and do it with no indecision.

I am still playing this game. Ive played through all the numbered scenarios, and have been playing the historical scenarios, in historical sequence. I just played the battle of dogger bank (Dutch vs UK) and managed to lose, playing the Dutch. I should taken advantage of my initial crossing of the T's of the English fleet to fire at the hulls instead of the sails, I think.
Next up, the big battle of this war, the Battle of the Capes, which won American Independence.
