I dont follow alt civs mainly becuase it is too confusing. There are projects that have boards here, Free civ, and GGS, and ones like MD which get attention but dont have their own board. then there are several mentioned which seem to be dead, afaik. ANd while MD and GSS seem to be distinct games, one gets the impression that Free Civ is just a Linux port of Civ. I dont have the time or inclination to go hunting websites for each project. It would be useful, therefore, if someone could put up a simple comparitive fact sheet on the different alt civs. What their gameplay goals are, what platforms, what programming languages, current status (this does NOT need to be frequently updated - just would be good to seperate out those at alpha test, those released, those dead for 5 years)

I realize it may come off as obnoxious to ask for this, when im not volunteering to do it - just consider it a friendly suggestion.

Hi gang,

Well, it's here. I sure hope I didn't forget anything

This is *not* a daily build, this is an official release. As such, it can be found on our download page, not on the front page (where you might be used to seeing it). I'm taking the Daily build section down, to prevent confusion.

Here are the notes for this version.

=======ALPHA BUILD 0.4.0.000=========================
A new build has been made available, and can be found at http://www.rjcyberware.com/ (go to the download page) . You will need an unzipper program to decompress the program files.

Version 0.4.0.000 Build / Designer Notes:

1) Bug Fix: Cities will now always collect resources as appropriate.
--Previously, a city might or might not collect resources from a resource icon, even when it was in range. It will now do so in all cases.

2) City Names will now appear on the resource information panel.
--When a resource Icon is highlighted, and is currently being mined by a city, the name of the city will appear.

3) Stack scroll buttons on the stack info panel are now functional.
--Using the left or right arrow buttons on this panel will cycle though all available stacks, centering them on the map.

4) Bug Fix: Stacks and Cities in unexplored areas will no longer appear on the map.

5) Stack Order menu dots will now only appear for stacks that belong to the current player.
--No more telling enemy stacks to found cities

6) Diplomacy screen designed.
--The screen can be accessed via the "Mail" button on the message panel. Alas, the screen is still not functional, but at least you can see it.

7) Bug Fix: Component costs and Unit Template costs will now appear correctly on the Item description panel
--In the Unit Workshop screen, the item description panel was using an old system. It has been updated, and now dispalys costs correctly.

8) Bug Fix: Corrected an AV error on game open.
--If there were no stacks do display, an AV error would occur when the game was started. This is no longer the case.

9) Bug Fix: Stack names will now be correctly named.

10) Cost Lists are now displayed on the city screen.
--Whenever you click on an item in the production queue, you will get a list of how much it costs. Designs will show total costs. Items in the actual queue will show how many resources remain to complete the item.

11) Partial Production is now functional.
--If an item in the production queue cannot be completed by your city due to lack of resources, it will be completed as much as possible, leaving remaining amounts to future turns.

12) Several AV errors were fixed on game open.
--If no resources are shown on the main map, the game would display an AV error. This is no longer the case.

13) Production queue items may be moved up and down the list.
--Allows you to change the priority of items in your queue. Use the up/down arrows on the city production panel.

14) Adjustments were made to most Unit Template costs, as well as several template components.

15) Bug Fix: AV error fixed when picking a stack
--On certain ocassions, attempting to highlight a stack would cause an error. This is no longer the case.

16) Specific Leaders and Units may now be moved into and out of a city.
--Previously only entire groups could be moved in or out of a city. You may now move them individually as desired.

17) Technology restrictions have been restored
--This includes Unit Templates, Unit Components, and Resource Icons. If you don't have the required tech, you won't get to use these items. Start researching...

========The Next Build============
The formats of future builds will change slightly. If games begin to be played (and I know of at least one that is starting ), we will allow the next few build items be driven by player requests for improvement of the game. I do, however, intend to give some priority to the Diplomacy screen, and Combat will be coming very shortly.

The Daily Builds section has now been retired. All future releases (and patches) will be on our download page.

========Other Notes==============
A text file has been provided with this build. This is sort of a mini-tutorial on how to set up and play a game. If you are unfamiliar with how to play MD, or how PBEM games work, please read over this file.

Note that it is possible to create a stack which has no units or leaders in it (from the city screen, move units in the city out to the map, then pull them back into the city). The (now empty) stack will now appear outside the city. I recommend against doing this, for if you click on an empty stack, you will get an error, and this will cause you to be unable to click on *all* stacks, even full ones. I'm working on this bug. For now, just avoid this situation, and don't create an empty stack. If you do, don't click on it!

With this release, multiplayer games are now an option! Single player games are still a little ways off (we're working on it!). If you begin a game, let me know how it goes. And send in any requests you have for improvement of the game. If something about the play of the game really bugs you, send me a note! Your input is critical to us at this stage.

This build's game files are *not* compatable with previous versions of the game, so you must create a new game rather than try to load older game files. A four player game has been provided with the download. Note that from now on, I will make every attempt to keep game files compatable with previous versions, in order to avoid disrupting ongoing games. I can't make any promises, but I will do my best!

Enjoy!

Ron

Which mods should I get? A newbie guide.

Trying to figure out which mods to get for your CtP game is confusing, especially for someone new to Apolyton. Therefore, I have pasted some posts here which, I think, do a good job of explaining which mods to get, and what order to install them in.

You need to get the 1.2 patch first, then the 1.21 hack, which are both found in the Patches part of the Download section.
Form here on, you have several options. The most popular ones are described in the posts below, though there may be recent mods available which could change your mind.

From Madcow23:
The basic is the Apolyton Pack. It contains a fixed version of Celestial Dawn's 4.2 mod (THE essential CTP mod - he called it "CTP as it is meant to be played" and believe me, that's a good description) together with a few other niceties such as Harlan's excellent graphics mod.

You'll need to read the README for the Apolyton pack to learn how to avoid the bugs that remain, but it's not too difficult. Also read the PowerSLICs readme in the same pack, as you'll need to tweak one text file to avoid strange messages.

But that's your basics. Play a few games with the Apolyton pack and you'll agree it's a hell of a TBS. (And don't even consider playing at anything below KING level).

If you decide you want more after that, there's plenty to choose from. WesW and Nordicus' Awesome AIPs pack is great if you find yourself wiping the floor with the opposition. It's worth it for the diplomacy improvements alone. And WesW is currently working on an ambitious series of mods, of which the Medieval Mod is currently available and the Modern Mod is arriving shortly. These look superb too and incorporate the Awesome AIP changes.

The world is your oyster! Have fun, and make sure to let us all know what you think.

From Don Blevens (Scorpion59):
All,
The order should be:
1) CTP
2) CTP 1.2 Patch
3) Civfan 1.21 Hack (found in the Patches part of the Download section along with the 1.2 Patch)
4) Apolyton Pack
which includes: CD's Mod & Graphics, TP's PowerSLIC 2, Harlan's Graphics Mod, Slax's Color00.txt and Zaz & Uppsala's Maps)
5) WesW's Medieval Mod
(which includes Awesome AIPs)

If you do not install the Medieval Mod, you need to install the AwesomeAIPs(Pack Version, not CD's or Original).

Hope this helps.
Don

Note: I have combined the Med mod and the Apolyton Pack into a single download. Currently it is available only at my homepage, given in the link at the top of this post. In the futrue, it will also be available here at Apolyton.

The Clash of Civilizations Project

My apologies for all the shouting, but new people to the forum were having trouble finding the basic info on what's going on with the project.

What's going on:

This is a project for a civ-like game (but Not a clone) called The Clash of Civilizations.

Your first stop should be at the Clash Web Site. It's Packed with information on where we are right now, and where we're going!

Our Forum for suggestions and working out a design spec is Right Here. Please comment on things you like or don't like. Make alternative suggestions, its an open mike . But please read the "Suggestions" link on the web site so you know how to make your comments in a way that will have a lasting impact on the development.

If you just want to say a quick hi, and maybe ask one or two general questions, please use the... The Clash forum guestbook v.2.

And if you're interested in helping out by responding to our poll about Clash's design, then please go to: Give us feedback - answer our questions!

Clash Status:

The overall design of the game is fairly far along, although there are still quite a few areas weak on smaller details. Coding is fairly advanced in many areas like the Map, Military, Economy, Technology and Social/Government. Our latest demo to acid-test our game models and interfaces is available off the web page. Please note the demos are to give the team and outsiders a Very early chance at commenting on the design, and are Nowhere Near the finished product!

Gary Thomas is now organizing the coding (as of about 4/01). He maintains good professional coding standards, and is implementing as much as he can as fast as he can. Laurent is developing the military model code, and I've done a lot on economy and social/government, but am in the process of turning it over to Gary. There is also continuous work on several models that are in the latest demo, or will be in its immediate successor.

We are now using a 'radical' programming/design approach where we will try to release new versions frequently for comment and bug-hunting etc. This approach relies less on design docs, and more on a 'living' evolution of the game design as the coding progresses. A release with major new features is expected every few months!

The game as it stands is not as far along as we'd like it to be! We all want something Really playable. But as the coding progresses, there are a lot of ways that good thoughts in the design area can still seriously influence the final game at this point. So we want to hear from you!

This is your chance to comment on a civ-like game to someone who will Really Listen. To get your comments in the right places, so they can have the maximum effect, please look over the model on the appropriate web page area First, and post in the most recent thread.

Note: For people who aren't familiar with Apolyton, there are a Lot of good ideas for changes in civ-like games in the other forums. If you look at posts for the last year you'll see a Lot of interesting suggestions.

And finally if you want more info, but don't want to read more than a few pages, check out the Clash of Civilizations Feature on Alt Civs. It duplicates some of the info above, but does add a fair amount of detail to what you've already seen.

PERUGIA, Italy - An American student accused of fatally stabbing her British roommate in Italy had a growing hatred for the victim and killed her in retaliation during a drug-fueled sex game, a prosecutor contended Friday in closing arguments at her murder trial.

Lead prosecutor Giuliano Mignini argued that Amanda Knox, together with her ex-boyfriend and co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito and a third man convicted in a separate trial last year, killed Meredith Kercher under "the fumes of drugs and possibly alcohol." Knox and Sollecito tried to cover up their crime by staging a burglary, he contended.

Knox, of Seattle, wanted to get back at Kercher for saying she was not clean and for calling her promiscuous, Mignini argued.

"Amanda had the chance to retaliate against a girl who was serious and quiet," Mignini said. "She had harboured hatred for Meredith, and that was the time when it could explode. The time had come to take revenge on that smug girl."

Knox, who has denied wrongdoing, appeared to be weeping as Mignini described the wounds on Kercher's body. Her lawyer, Luciano Ghirga, sitting next to her, at one point held her hand. Looking discouraged and keeping her head down, she was hugged and comforted by lawyers during breaks.

Mignini recalled previous testimony by Kercher's friends, in which the Briton reportedly expressed surprise and irritation at Knox's behaviour. Knox has denied having major problems with Kercher and has said in the past she was shocked at the death of a woman she considered a friend.

Knox and Sollecito are charged with murder and sexual violence in the 2007 killing in the central Italian town of Perugia. Sollecito also maintains he is innocent.

Ivory Coast citizen Rudy Hermann Guede is appealing his conviction and 30-year sentence handed down after the fast-track trial he requested.

Mignini contended that Knox, Sollecito and Guede met at the apartment where Kercher was killed on Nov. 1, 2007, shortly before the slaying, likely to settle some drug issues with Guede, who was known in Perugia for dealing drugs. According to the prosecutor, Kercher and Knox started arguing and then the three brutally attacked the Briton.

Kercher's body, her throat slit, was found in a pool of blood the next day.

Occasionally raising his voice during his seven hour-long argument, Mignini described what he called "an unstoppable crescendo of frenzied violence," which began with Knox and Sollecito trying to take off Kercher's clothes and threatening her.

At one point, Knox hit Kercher's head against a wall, then tried to strangle her, as Sollecito held her and Guede sexually assaulted her, Mignini alleged.

"They realized that Meredith would not give up fighting and at that point, the match had to be brought to an end," he said.

Mignini said Knox used a knife to cut Kercher's throat, causing the deepest wound, while Sollecito used another knife to threaten her.

According to prosecutors, a knife with a 6 1/2-inch (16.5-centimetre) blade with Kercher's DNA on the blade and Knox's on the handle was found at Sollecito's house.

"That is the weapon with which Amanda inflicted the deadly blow," Mignini said. Defence lawyers argue that the knife is too big to match Kercher's wounds and the amount of what prosecutors say is Kercher's DNA is too low to be attributed with certainty.

Prosecutors also maintain Sollecito's DNA was found on the clasp of Kercher's bra, although his defence team contends that the evidence might have been inadvertently contaminated during the investigation.

Also on Friday, Mignini said that Knox and Sollecito staged a burglary in the apartment by breaking a window in a bedroom in an attempt to sidetrack the investigation.

A rock was found in a bedroom, and witnesses testified that shattered glass was found all over clothes on the floor, suggesting the window was broken after the room was put into disarray.

"The key to the mystery is in that room," Mignini said, adding that it would be nearly impossible to climb through the window without getting cut and leaving blood on the shattered glass.

Also, he argued, that window, the most exposed of the apartment, was an unlikely choice for a burglar. Nothing in the room with the broken glass, which belonged to a roommate of Knox and Kercher, was reported missing, Mignini noted.

"All of this was done to channel suspicions on a stranger, and divert them from those who had the apartment keys," he said.

Knox's defence lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova said Mignini's reconstruction was "suggestive," but it failed to present solid evidence.

Prosecutors were expected to formally make their sentencing requests to the eight-member jury Saturday, while a verdict is expected in early December. They are expected to request life in prison - Italy's stiffest punishment.

The 22-year-old Knox maintains she spent the night of the murder at Sollecito's house in Perugia. The 25-year-old Sollecito has said he was home working at his computer that night. He said he does not remember if Knox spent the whole night with him or just part of it.

Defence lawyers for Knox and Sollecito are working on the theory that Guede was the sole attacker.
